Property Claims

When you have damage to your business, business property or someone else’s property, or someone is injured on your property here are some initial steps to keep in mind:

  • Depending on the circumstance, call the appropriate emergency personnel such as the fire department or police department.
  • Try to protect your property, or the property of others, from further damage.
  • Contact your agent or call us directly at 1-800-235-2942 to report the loss or injury.
  • Keep a record of any necessary temporary repair costs.
  • Call 1-800-235-2942 to report your claim.
  • Be sure your agent and claims adjuster know how and where to reach you; provide them with a phone number and location where you can be reached.
  • Protect your property from additional damage. Have a reliable local contractor patch broken windows or exposed areas of the roof with plywood. Your CWG claims representative may be able to recommend a reliable local contractor.
  • Even if you feel some items may be damaged beyond repair, don't dispose of them until your CWG claims representative has examined them.

Inventory your personal and business items

A written record of your property is one of the best ways to make sure you get the full protection due under your policy. An up-to-date inventory of your property also provides a good way for you and your independent agent to make sure you have enough insurance protection.

To record your inventory:

Complete one area at a time. Fill in the purchase date, purchase price and estimated replacement cost. Take pictures or video images of items that are especially valuable, and be sure to date them. Save receipts, repair invoices, warranty certificates or any other documentation that can help verify the existence of your property.

When your inventory is complete:

Store your policy and a printed copy (or a copy on diskette) of your completed inventory together in a secure place away from your business -- such as a safe deposit box at your bank. Include all photos, receipts and other documentation.

It's a good idea to update your inventory and review it with your agent every year or so. This will help ensure that your property is adequately insured.
