The Warner Bros Studios summer blockbuster, Twisters, tells the story of tornado chasers during a record-setting storm season in Oklahoma. While the movie’s science may be fiction, its references to the increase of volatile weather patterns, throughout the Midwest particularly, are not.

In CWG’s home office state of Iowa, this violent and tumultuous weather has set a new mark with a record number of tornadoes in 2024. The previous state record was 122, set in 2004. As of this summer, Iowa’s storm season has already surpassed that number.

Within the insurance market, a wide range of claims come from weather. Businesses in the Midwest have been most impacted by hail, wind, and tornadoes. These events can cause disruptions that take your business out of commission for days, weeks, or even months.

As new weather patterns such as derechos and bomb cyclones increase, the impacts can be devastating, particularly in the Agribusiness division. When grain elevators and grain bins are destroyed by wind events, it takes time to get back up and running properly.

Large hailstorms are causing massive damage as well. These storms impact roofs and air conditioning units on top of buildings leading to roof leaks which affect interior structures and inventory. Hail also damages automobiles, causing fleets to sustain dents and dings which can be an eyesore when conducting business. Clients must take the time to repair vehicles, which affects their overall business functionality.

What Can You Do?

While weather can be monitored and even predicted, it cannot be prevented. The best plan of action is to be proactive about coverage. Consider the following:

  • Apply wind/hail deductibles to property coverage
  • Evaluate the actual cash value terms of automobiles and property so you are properly covered for commercial policies
  • Have an emergency preparation plan in place
  • Business continuity plans should incorporate interruptions, such as supply chain shortages and delays due to weather
  • If you have a claim, report it the same day so we can immediately begin the process of supporting your business

How Can We Help?

Our goal at CWG is to provide timely and prompt claims service so we can get our clients back to business. You can expect same-day contact from a claims representative. Following a weather event, let us walk you through the proper local protocols to ensure everything is ready for you to resume business.

The weather may be changing, but our commitment to your business is not.
