Ambition: Going the Extra Mile

“The difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary is the little extra” -Jimmy Johnson

Reflecting on this quote reminds us of the book: “H3 Leadership – Be Humble, Stay Hungry, Always Hustle” by Brad Lomenick. Here are some of the lessons that have stuck with us and served as reminders of the importance and long-term benefits of goal-setting and self-development.

After all, establishing healthy, sustainable routines and habits influence who you become and what you value in personal and corporate arenas.

Be Humble

Humility takes practice, there’s no denying that. Being showered in accolades can feel empowering, encouraging, and confidence-boosting – and it’s important to be proud of your accomplishments – but practicing humility and service to others can be even more rewarding than hanging another plaque on the wall.

Humility is about not always working to benefit yourself, but rather to serve your greater community and expect nothing in return. Genuine humility is a reflection of good character and is a common goal among many yet attained by few.

Stay Hungry

Strive for more. Consistently. Be ambitious and go for that promotion, get serious about learning a new language, read a book that challenges you to think in new and different ways. Successful individuals are highly motivated and never fully satisfy their hunger to achieve more because they know there is success in perseverance.

Pushing toward loftier goals may open opportunities and expand your awareness of what the world has to offer. Be willing to go the extra mile not because someone asked you to but because you’re motivated to achieve excellence and because you take (humble) pride in what you do.

Always Hustle

Let’s clear up a common misconception about good hustle meaning you have to work yourself into the ground. Quite the opposite, in fact, hustling implies that you have the energy to invest in your personal and professional development. Every hour, month, year of hustling adds up to a lifetime of successes, whether they seem insignificant or life-changing.

The true benefit of personal development is that you will view your cup as being consistently and sustainably half full so you can pour a little into each of those around you without draining every last ounce of your energy. When you feel good and have established healthy routines and habits, the deeper you dive into self-development, the better prepared you’ll be to help your team and your community.

Closing Thoughts

Take pride in your commitment to self-development; not only because it sets you up for personal success, but also because it allows you to become a better leader and, therefore, be more willing to go above and beyond in my work with your team.

We invite you to reflect on the following questions: Do you go the extra mile? Why – what motivates you to go the extra mile? What are the results you’ve experienced from going the extra mile?
