Summary

  • Builds strong partnerships with specifically identified agencies to establish a pipeline of middle-market business to CWG, promote profitability and growth of new business based on individual goals, and the retention of existing business. Ensures agents’ understanding and utilization of CWG products, services and automated systems.
  • Assesses commercial insurance risks and determines accurate classification of business, policy contract forms and pricing of risk. Collaborates with regional Underwriting, Loss Control and Claims. Makes presentations to agency staffs and prospective accounts. Provides technical advice, direction and mentoring to the Claims Department staff on high severity and/or complex commercial casualty claims. 10%

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Assists in development and implementation of macro (regional and enterprise) as well as micro (state, city, rural area, agent level) strategies for driving long term success in middle market and small commercial property and casualty across all major lines of business.

Manages an assigned commercial underwriting function and staff through delegation of underwriting authority.  Ensures adherence to Letter of Authority and other Underwriting standards and guidelines.

Monitors the risk acceptability, pricing adequacy and classification accuracy of accounts to ensure profitability and managed growth of business.  Consults with underwriters and Home Office Underwriting on risk acceptability, coverages, pricing, terms and conditions.

Underwrites accounts exceeding authority level of underwriting staff by analyzing applications, risk services reports, Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs), financial reports, etc.  Determines accurate classification of business, policy contract forms and pricing of risk.  Refers accounts to Home Office Underwriting, as needed, based on established guidelines.

Administration

·       Ensures disaster recovery plan for the databases and the warehouse are up-to-date by performing a periodic review and maintains metrics on uptime and system availability for each database and OLAP system.

Travels to insured location(s) to complete physical audits.  Reviews company records, interviews staff and observes operations to document and verify classification, workers employment status, financial stability, operations, locations and ownership of each named insured.  Identifies and documents risk exposures which are not shown under the policy contract.  Investigates and verifies the premium base exposures according to policy contract terms, manual rules, company filings and procedures.  Calculates exact exposures for each insured audited.  

Recommends corrective action if insured’s records are inadequate, the financial situation is unsatisfactory, or the insured is uncooperative. 

Complies with state regulations and company guidelines, and maintains working knowledge of all insurance manuals, premium audit manuals, and related material. 

Resolves disputed audits with insureds, agents, underwriting, and collections. 

Assists other Field Premium Auditors, Premium Audit Department staff and Underwriters with classification questions and issues.

Surveys business operations and consults with policyholders and underwriting to determine the type and level of exposures and controls needed.  Determines customers’ ability to control the exposures by gathering information through physical surveys, program audits, loss history analysis, comparison to industry standards and customer interviews.  Provides training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to staff and customers.   Assists Underwriters with risk selection and ongoing account management. 
 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Surveys commercial properties such as buildings, industrial operations, agri-business operations, and commercial vehicles to evaluate physical conditions, safety practices, and hazardous situations according to knowledge of safety standards, established underwriting guidelines and governmental regulations.  Utilizes experience and technical expertise to survey large or complex operations as requested by supervisor/manager. Observes business operations and management practices to determine safety issues and hazards.  Analyzes history of accidents and claims and inspects scenes of accidents to determine causes and to consult in development of accident prevention programs.  Measures insured area(s), records description of operations, and photographs or drafts scale drawings of properties, to identify factors affecting risk acceptability and insurance premiums.  
  • Consults with insured in regard to activities and programs to control losses and improve safety.  Confers with employees of insured, provides informational materials, and conducts training as needed induce compliance with safety standards, codes, and regulations.  
  • Prepares timely written reports of findings to assist the Underwriter’s risk selection process and makes recommendation to help accounts reduce potential for loss.  
  • Provides training, mentoring, specialized technical advice and counsel to internal staff regarding regulations, hazards and controls associated with area(s) of expertise.  
  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards (OSHA, DOT) and local and national codes (NFPA, ICC) through participation in continuing education opportunities.  Performs miscellaneous office duties not limited to answering phone calls, emails and completing schedules, etc.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

  
Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with emphasis in occupational/industrial safety, agricultural science, engineering or insurance; or three to five years property/casualty risk control experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Working knowledge of insurance coverages, local state and federal regulations pertaining to safety (OSHA, DOT, NFPA).  Training/presentation experience desired. 

 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to travel on a frequent basis including overnight; work in a self-directed environment; perform multiple duties in a fast paced environment; quickly and professionally respond to customer inquiries; prioritize and organize assigned tasks.  Possess strong customer orientation and effective interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills.  In-depth knowledge of insurance coverages, local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to safety (DOT, NFPA and OSHA regulations). Regularly and consistently demonstrates commitment to company values and guiding principles.   Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Ability to efficiently navigate the Internet to conduct research.

 
Licenses/Certifications/Designations

Valid driver’s license required.  Safety Profession, Risk Control Specialist certification desired.  Completion of or working toward AINS, ARM, CPCU or similar designation.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about on foot to accomplish tasks; use fingers to pick up, pinch, twist, or keyboard; express themselves by speaking includes conveying detailed or important spoken information accurately; distinguish sounds at normal levels (with or without correction); be able to receive detailed information orally; move wrists, hands and/or fingers repetitively; and operate a motor vehicle.  The employee is occasionally required to be seated; extend their hands/arms in any direction; raise or lower objects or move objects from place to place; and hold onto objects with their fingers/palms.

The employee must occasionally lift or exert force up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment

While in the field, the employee will frequently be exposed to extreme heat and cold, extreme temperature changes, humidity or wetness, mechanical hazards, and moving objects.  The employee will occasionally will be exposed to loud noise, vibrations, chemical hazards, poor ventilation, sharp objects, cluttered/slippery floors, elevated surfaces, poor lighting, and fumes, odors, gases, dust, or mist.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate (business office with computers and printers).
