When operating a business, many things can be done to reduce the possibility of claims. One of the simplest–and often overlooked–is to maintain a quality housekeeping service or protocol. This not only ensures a pleasing environment but also a well-maintained and low-risk property.

As a general rule, walking surfaces and working areas should be clean, clutter-free, and dry. Within the housekeeping umbrella, programs, and protocols should include situation-specific items such as Fire Prevention (including storage and handling of hazardous materials), Spill Control, and Bloodborne Pathogens plans as well as other emergency-minded protocols.

Remember, poor housekeeping can lead to more claims frequency, which may lead to rate increases.

Which workplace hazards can be prevented or reduced with good housekeeping?

  • Maintaining clear walkways/paths/stairs, including clearing snow and ice and cleaning spills, can reduce employee slips and falls.
  • Having clear walkways and exits is essential to fire safety and allows for better access to emergency equipment such as eye wash stations and first aid kits.
  • Sprinkler heads are also essential to fire safety. Poor housekeeping around sprinkler heads (generally expect an 18” clearance) can hinder their function in a fire event.
  • Oily rags (such as those used in auto service shops) must be stored in approved containers to prevent spontaneous combustion.
  • Keep hoses and electrical cords from crossing walking paths to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Tools and waste material should not be left out or at a height from which they could fall and injure a worker.
  • Slip-resistant footwear should be considered in certain situations.
