Harvest season brings unique safety challenges – especially for those working around grain bins.  Grain handling is one of the most dangerous tasks in the farming world, and each year, preventable accidents occur in and around grain bins. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a new hand on the crew, understanding the dangers and precautions you can take could save lives.

The Hidden Dangers of Grain Handling

Grain bins may look harmless, but they can be deadly. Just a few seconds is all it takes to become trapped in flowing grain, and it can be nearly impossible to get out by yourself. Extreme caution should be taken whenever an employee enters a grain storage structure. Many incidents are avoidable but continue to happen. It’s easy for employees to become lax about procedures during the long hours of harvest season, but it only takes one second for an accident to occur. Strict bin entry policies can help ensure that employees always get out safely.

Common Hazards Include:

Prevention Measures for Engulfments:

  • Use the buddy system, never enter alone
  • All employees should be trained on hazards associated with grain bin entry
  • Shutdown and lock-out/tag-out equipment (so grain cannot start filling or be pulled out of the bin while employees are inside)
  • Use a written permit
  • Test air quality (never enter if oxygen levels are below 19.5%)
  • Don’t count on someone outside of the bin to hear shouted instructions
  • Wear a body harness with a lifeline
  • Know your emergency action plan including rescue procedures, how to obtain emergency help, and the equipment that is available

It’s always important for employers to understand the OSHA requirements within their areas of risk. Review Standard 1910.272 for Grain Handling Facilities and utilize the CWG Risk Services Team to make sure your worksite is as safe as possible.

Harvest is a time of hard work and long hours, but it should never come at the cost of safety. By staying alert, following best practices, and looking out for one another, we can ensure that everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.
