Without a team, there is no network – without a network, there is no connection – without connection, there is no opportunity. A team is an intricate network of connections that opens a world of opportunities for ideas, solutions, and results. Building a sustainable team is the first step toward success. The key to building a sustainable team is threefold: listen, learn, lead.

Step 1: Listen

Get to know each team member on a personal level to understand how they work — and to earn their trust. As an example, talking with your team members and listening to their motivations and goals to help you better understand what makes them tick; what inside of them compels them to wake up in the morning and choose to work passionately? Tapping into those motivators may have pleasantly surprising outcomes that you and your team can benefit from. A motivated team is an efficient team that can celebrate the wins and learns from the losses.

Step 2: Learn

Learning about your employees will help you construct a passionate and productive team. Actively engaging in learning about each person’s strengths then determining which of their skill sets needs some fine-tuning allows you to make sure your team members have access to opportunities that will encourage them to grow. This way, you can delegate tasks and responsibilities that will simultaneously be well-suited for the individual and benefit the team as a whole. Identifying strengths and areas for improvement will help you develop an exceptional team.

Step 3: Lead

A team is only as dynamic as its members. To build that team, a strong leader will need to find common goals for the team, establish a course of action, and align the best talent in each position. At this point, you know your team better than anyone, so you know how to lead your team better than anyone — trust yourself. If you have listened and learned, identified the great potential within your employees, and brainstormed creative ways to approach your goals, you are prepared to turn a room of employees into an office of teammates.

Team building doesn’t happen overnight — it takes time, patience, and dedication. There are a lot of factors that influence the evolution of culture, so fostering the growth of a sustainable workplace culture requires an immense amount of commitment to studying and understanding team dynamics and work metrics. With the necessary balance of skills and experience, you will be able to build your optimal team and witness great, sustainable success. Dive in and enjoy the process.
